This piece was turned and carved from a quarter section of Box Elder. I turned the wood to the basic shape and then carved the spirals around the vase inside and out. The inspiration for this piece came from the coloring of the wood. It is spalted which causes the grey coloring and the red is caused by insect damage which creates red streaks throughout the tree. My idea was to create a piece that looked like a small whirlwind whipping the fire and smoke up into the air. |
