I carved this piece from a mesquite log measuring 21” in diameter and 8” long. I found the wood at a firewood dealer in Van Zandt County, Texas. I first turned the piece on a wood lathe to the finished thickness on the bottom of the bowl and left it about 3” thick along the rim for carving the wavy edge. This log had many wind checks, which I believe are partial separations of the annual growth rings caused by swaying in the wind. All of these wind checks were inlayed with turquoise, which give the piece a great look when displayed upright on a stand.
