Natural Edged Platter
This platter was turned from a large maple burl. Burls are an abnormal growth on a tree. There are a few theories as to what causes burls, such as disease or singed by a forest fire, but I am not sure anyone knows exactly what causes these abnormal growths. However, the wood is very beautiful and highly sought after. I kept the natural shape of the perimeter of the burl, dished out the top and turned a foot on the bottom. This piece is 3” tall when sitting on its foot but displays best upright on a stand. It is approximately 21” in diameter. |
